Nearly 200 Children Linked to One Donor, And a Serious Gene
|
|
A Danish sperm donor, identified only as “Kjeld,” has fathered at least 197 children across Europe. An investigation later found he carries a rare TP53 gene mutation tied to Li-Fraumeni syndrome, which can push lifetime cancer risk as high as 90 percent. The donor himself is healthy and reportedly unaware, since the mutation exists only in some of his sperm cells. The samples were distributed to 67 clinics in 14 countries over more than a decade. It’s the sort of story that makes you realize modern medicine is remarkable, and also very, very human. |
