In a park in Rio de Janeiro, talipot palm trees planted back in the 1960s are flowering at last, and they only do it once. After waiting 40 to 80 years, each tree sends up a huge plume packed with millions of small white blossoms. It’s nature’s version of saving everything for a grand finale, then bowing out. Kind of beautiful, kind of dramatic, and also a reminder that some things really do take their sweet time.

Melbourne bagpipers go big on AC/DC, claim a world record

In Melbourne, hundreds of bagpipers gathered to play AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top,” aiming for a new world record. They did it in Federation Square, the same spot tied to the band’s famous 1976 video with the truck and the noise and the swagger. On one hand, it’s a fun tribute to a classic song. On the other hand, it’s also proof that if you give people bagpipes and a big goal, they will absolutely use both in public.
